Mend the Gap: United Kingdom

Our International U.K. Charity

Mend the Gap was founded in 2007 by members of the Eastern African diaspora in the UK. Based in rural North Somerset in England, Mend The Gap is a small international charity supporting communities across the Eastern African region. The charity uses traditional cultural governance systems, local community-based organisations, social networks and international development standards. It links these to and lobby with other ethical, and sustainable development actors locally, nationally and internationally in the context of the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Mend The Gap's mission is to help individuals and their communities fight for a fairer and more dignified world by helping them mend the gap between cultures, religions, generations, and people of different wealth to benefit current and future generations. The charity does this through the dual charitable objects of eradicating poverty and promoting the cause of education.

To achieve the objectives of Mend The Gap our team reaches out to all our networks, contacts, and fundraisers. We make sure all our goals, whether short or long term, are based on connecting people personally and directly on the local level through to the global. We believe this allows for long term, real and self sustaining development in some of the poorest parts of our world.

The East African communities Mend The Gap supports face many challenges. Mend the Gap is involved building community sites and centres to help the people we support overcome the wide range of issues they face. Through expertise, volunteering and fundraising, we build self-managing networks to achieve sustainable development for the indefinite future.

About Perimart International: Kenya

The Host of the Perimart Masai Mara Marathon

PI has 4 strategic programmes:
1). An Environment and Governance Programme
2). Socio-Economic Development Programme
3). Capacity Building Programme
4). HIV/AIDS Programme.

Perimart International was registered in 2012 in Kenya as a regional NGO and is one of the community sites Mend The Gap directly supports.

The mission of Perimart International is to mobilize and galvanize the poor, vulnerable and marginalized communities in Maasai region to improve their livelihood. This is achieved through their empowerment, participation and facilitation to access and add value to national, regional and global market economies in collaboration with other stakeholders on matters related to sustainable environmental management, trade and development.

Perimart International is a radical and innovative idea that challenges conventional development practice.

It is about creating a powerful enough coalition, in Africa and beyond, with clear and innovative solutions and galvanizing strategies. It is about creating a compelling vision to eradicate poverty, marginalization and vulnerability in Africa and thus guarantee the long-term and sustainable global commons for the benefit of all humanity - based on African settings and realities. Perimart International focuses on providing technical, financial and facilitative inputs to help it's community who lie in the margins and periphery of the global market economy.

Hence the name Perimart International:  “Peri” for those at the periphery of the global market economy or “mart” and “international” because the struggle is international in nature within Africa and beyond.

The idea is to radically change the position of marginalized and vulnerable African communities  – not to just change the physical conditions under which they live. It is about addressing fundamental changes in the way the global business and  poverty reduction, efforts are conducted in order to cope with the ever changing global economy; within the realities of  the African settings. We aim to   move away from the dependence on government and the donor monopoly on development, which has stifled African choice and ultimate responsibility through government and donor tendencies to manage through uniformity in order to maintain control.
